a loving review of the fuecoco build-a-bear

9/15/24, 8:30p

hey! this is a bit of a new different type of blogpost i'm doing periodically where i review build-a-bears and other merchandise. and by 'review' i mean talk affectionately about things including sizing and construction. but to be honest i am making this most of all because i love my fuecoco and i hope this encourages anyone who is looking at one of the build a bear pokemon, especially the starters :)

construction

FABRIC TYPE: soft, minky
STITCHING: very good!! i have never had a BAB fall apart at the seams so far

the eyes and nose are a very pleasant embroidery! the single tooth is a softer felt. my main gripe is the 'flame' hair is three pieces of BAB felt sewn together, and BAB felt is the scratchiest felt i've ever... felt. but it's a pretty small area so it doesn't ruin the enjoyment for me. 👍

he is lovely shaped. his mouf is closed which is kind of unique because so far most pokecenter plushies have his mouth Open. he's very soft to the touch and mine is medium stuffed so he is plenty cuddly and squishable with enough firmness i can also use him as a back pillow sometimes. most pokemon babs are this extremely soft, minky fabric; at least the mimikyu from last year is identical in texture to fuecoco's fabric and i LOVE it. it's not quite squishmallow fabric texture but it's pretty close!

pepper (the fuecoco shown here) is my emotional support plushie/pokemon and i have taken him a lot of places since i got him. he is very resiliant to water for a fire type and has sprinted home through two seperate downpours with me (vital for a pokemon living in the pacific northwest) with no side effects, outside of needing to sit in front of a fan and a low heater for a bit to dry off afterwards. he does not fit most average BAB clothes and can only fit the fuecoco exclusives plush open button-ups. he also does not fit in a kanken regular size backpack, or at least he did not under duress at the arcade. he did fit in a little grocery bag though so maybe i was just too sleepy to figure it out.

he is very squishable! perfect to hold and carry around. i would like to imagine this is life size because i feel like roy from horizons carrying him around.

an image of the BAB fuecoco next to an nintendo switch, showing he is roughly 1 1/4ths switch tall

as you can see, fuecoco is 1 & 1/4th switches tall. he is about a switch wide (photo not included). i think sprigatito is very similar in dimensions, and in general most of the pokemon babs are sort of big and Chunky compared to other BABs like the sanrio ones. he is perfectly snuggleable and a good pillow. but they are big. do not be mistaken by this. they are roughly two regular sized BABs held together, maybe more. this is a running trend as the mimikyu BAB is one of the biggest mimikyus i own.

your BAB fuecoco will require many tamato berries to care for him. fuecoco like being in small, cozy spaces, and prefer being held by their owners. fuecoco do not like being left alone or submerged in water for extended periods of time.

if you are on the fence about getting one, get one! they are wonderfully made and my emotional support fuecoco has helped me immensely since i got him. also, people really like seeing you with a large pokemon plushie - when i took him to the arcade and got an edutainment card to jam initial d arcade stage and DDR a lot of people kept coming over to coo at him.

note: if you're interested in more BAB reviews (i also have mimikyu [2023] and halloween kuromi [2024]), let me know on fedi or via email!
