mayjune music roundup of 2024
6/26/24
folks, i bring to you the first semimonthly edition of: miles' Music Round Up!
"what the fuck is this?" you may ask. well i ran a poll on my fedi last month that could be summed up as this: i have a few ideas for many of my classic Long Rambling Blog Posts(TM), but i have had literally no energy to write these long coherent-ish posts. now my work schedule has recently changed so crossed fingers i feel slightly better enough to formulate another 6k words about kasuga ichiban of the rgg series, BUT:
the point is most folks seemed very excited at the prospect of shorter, more frequent-ish blog posts about random shit ive been into! and what i have been into lately is Music. new music (to me). so welcome to the inaugural miles music roundup (mmr) in which i talk an indeterminant amount about music! without further ado,
B SUPREME -- Patience
my june and lower-half-of-may have been me getting into my city pop, hip-hop, rap, and jpop eras! now i am not new to city pop and jpop well get into that later but i AM genuinely brand fucking new to hip-hop and rap, so a lot of my escapades have been the Classics including snoop dogg, dr. dre, and NWA among others! my partner also loves hiphop and rap so one of his music recs has made it into this roundup, but not this one! this one is a Miles Original.
b supreme, otherwise known as twitch streamer
baertaffy which is how i originally knew of him, is an indie rapper who has a pretty Fucking Good Sound if i do say so myself. dude can spit some fucking bars to the point it makes my head spin, and i
keep up with fast-paced music (i was exposed to a Lot of eminem as a kid.). i really like his sound and have been since his og debut which was entirely silly raps that were done very professionally, and dove back into his newest release in my Hip Hop And Rap immersion.
its really good. has a smooth even tone and texture throughout with enough energy variation in the backing tracks and vocals that every song catches your attention. sounds like video game music (positive). my favorite tracks are
SUNDOWN and
DAVE FRANCO. 9/10 i find myself throwing it on when i just need some music to do stuff to, like write!
RED VOX -- Garbage Land (EP)
ok so garbage land is actually an ep of two singles not on their next album but i bought this on bandcamp with real us dollars because i liked them so much and its my music roundup so here. if youre unfamiliar with red vox, red vox is an indie alt-rock band from staten island, new york; the main vocalist and guitar leads is vinny, who you
maaaaaaay know as a twitch streamer called vinesauce. red vox is a fucking fantastic band and ive been a huge fan since their first release and expect any future releases they do to make it into these but:
yo these two singles fucking SLAP.
garbage land, the title single, is described by the band as "beckhole surfers" and many people smarter than me have said that the beck vibes on this song are off the fucking charts. chillwave new york rat rap. the music video on youtube was shot entirely in VRchat. genuinely hope red vox does more rap because this song fucking BANGS.
clone me, on the other hand, is a classic indie rock banger about parasocial relationships and being held on a pedestal and it has been stuck in my head for fucking MONTHS. if this is a sampler of what the next albums sound is going to be like im gonna buy the fucking vinyl asap these songs are deadass INCREDIBLE.
10/10 i eagerly await the next album and may retroactively do
afterthoughts on one of these sometime! wow!
MEGAN THEE STALLION -- an assortment of singles from her albums
remember when i said my partner gave me music recs!!! he has had a small blast showing me megan thee stallions discography (i dont listen to modern radio for anyone wondering in advance. im sorry) and i had a blast enjoying the raw fucking skill on display holy shit.
HISS is straight fire and im very excited for the full album release after that like what?,
BOA samples gwen stefani which is just fucking incredible,
hot girl summer is... well. yeah i do be having a hot girl summer when that plays holy shit.
i think the world wasnt ready to fully admit how much of a banger WAP was btw. anyways because this isnt an Album specifically or anything this is where my notes end for now but i am very excited to listen to the HISS album when it comes out and i think her music fucking Slaps i have not heard a miss so far!
ATARASHII GAKKO! -- tokyo calling
ok actually this is both about
tokyo calling (album) and also the single
OTONABLUE (link for your listening enjoyment). my partner (luis) sent me a link at like 11pm one night to OTONABLUE because i have been on a major city pop classics kick after getting deep into the RGG series which has a lot of city pop karaoke tracks in Y0 specifically (EXHALES) And was like. i think youd like this group :). as he is he was completely right and jesus christ AG! is probably the most invested ive been in an idol group since like, SHINee.
so: i have ALWAYS been a big jpop and jrock fan. this is Not my first go around the bush BUT i have fallen majorly out of the idol fanbase and luis is the kpop stan between us, so AG! is my first foray back into the idol industry and specifically the japanese idol scene! and holy god theyre good is the good thing. holy fuck.
OTONABLUE, to get this out of the way, is NOT on the tokyo calling album but was in fact their huge hit single that catapulted them into international fame. it is VERY easy to see why. it is a BOP and a half that has some synths and sample distortion that very much invokes 80s' city pop! its like a love letter to city pop from the modern era! its SO good! its been stuck in my head for ages. the tokyo calling album however is ALSO full of fucking bangers as ive discovered;
tokyo calling (title track) is a huge standout, and invokes the Monster Movie and Final Boss theme well with a rhythmic drum track in the background that gets your blood pumping. ive also really liked FLY HIGH (not to be confused with the FLY HIGH!! by burnout syndromes, aka the 4th opening of the haikyuu anime) for having a really good lyric scheme and omakase for being also catchy as fuck and stuck in my head constantly.
AG! is good. their hype is earned. if you like jpop and want to see a very wide variety of jpop styles in one album performed with an amazing amount of skill, try tokyo calling. 8.5/10 its been added to my driving music rotation!
FLAVOR FOLEY ft. YI XI -- BUTCHER VANITY (single)
ok finally closing this with an ENGLOID* banger collab including a friend's friend: butcher vanity is a slapper of an english vocasynth release about romantic cannibalism. kind of.
song has good textures good lyrics good everything idk what else to say: ive recently been trying to keep up with modern new VOCALOID/virtual singer songs (*since synthV is so popular now that it almost feels like a legacy title to keep saying vocaloid i keep switching between vocasynth and virtual singer. please bear with me) after miku expo 2024 [F]. butcher vanity is an eng vocasynth that fucking SLAPS that came out while i was trying to sample the new world of vocasynth. it hit my spotify playlist in like 20 minutes. they use knife chopping sounds as a beat. go listen to it. 10/10
♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪
ok this got longer than i expected but i guess the point is this will be very variable :) i will be trying to include some new vocasynth songs every one of these i do (i am trying to keep up with the New Miku after project voltage came out! results will vary!) but otherwise this could be all over the place music taste wise. hopefully you enjoyed the first installment of Miles' Music Roundup (name pending) :)
